Australian Telephone Numbering Plan

Australia's standard telephone number now has ten digits which starts with "0" for both fixed line and mobile telephone numbers. However, for fixed lines, the 0 followed by the single digit area code does not need to be dialled when calling locally.

Mobile phone numbers are prefixed with 04, followed by two digits and the subscriber's number, dialled in full. Eg. 0402 xxx xxx. The two digit codes are allocated per network, although with the introduction of number portability, there is no longer a fixed relationship between the mobile phone number and the network it uses.

Emergency Services Number

000 is the emergency telephone number in Australia, but the internationally recognised GSM mobile emergency telephone number is 112 which also works for mobile telephones.

Free call, Toll Free & Premium Rate Numbers

Australia uses the free call prefix of 1800 for calls from land line telephones. Calls to 1800 numbers may incur a charge. Similarly, 190x is the prefix for premium rate services such as recorded information, competition lines, psychics, etc.

There are also 13 and 1300 numbers which are charged at the cost similar to a local call. All these types of telephone numbers are not accessible from outside Australia.

International Access Code / International Dialling Code

The main international prefix is 0011 for voice calls and 0015 for fax calls. However, there are also others for special purposes, such as 0018, a Telstra product for charging in half-hour blocks and 0014, a Primus product for discounted rates. For more information about dialling internationally to a specific country see the country codes page.
